Having had a taste of Alaska and Canada and some of the rockies and western US states by bike, Rides in Oz and a couple of short rides in Austria and Italy, we decided to put together a trip for 2019 covering both the East and West coasts of the USA and (eastern) Canada, taking in some of the best rides from the series of Whitehorse press books on the “Best Motorcycle rides in…………….” For this trip the books we chose were the “Best motorcycle rides in the Appalacians”, “Best motorcycle rides in New England” “Best motorcycle rides in the Southeast”, “Best motorcycle rides in the Rockies” “Best motorcycle rides in the Pacific Northwest” “Best motorcycle rides in California” and a few random rides from a couple of the two “Rideguide to America” books which describe a handful of rides from various corners of the USA. Putting together rides from these books that followed an ongoing single route allowing us to cover as many rides as possible from these books, was a delightful exercise in itself.
We depart New York on 2 July after shipping our bikes from Auckland to New Jersey with Mainfreight. Keep an eye on our blog and follow this mother of all road trips for some great scenery and motorcycling routes, through 29 States of the US and eastern Canada, covering some 22,000 kilometres. Our rides are predominantly tarmac as this is a two up with luggage tour, but we have a few gravel rides thrown in here and there to mix it up.
AMERICA - 2019
An 85 day 22,300 km journey starting late June 2019. Beginning in New York after sea freighting the bikes to New Jersey
Starts by heading up to Boston for the 4th of July, followed by the next 10 days or so in the 6 states that make up New England before hitting D.C. for a couple days sightseeing then into Pennsylvania again, down the Spine of the Appalachians taking in Skyline drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway as well as numerous other loop rides as we make our way down through this part of the US. We meander through most of the Southern States (except Florida) to finish up at our southernmost stay of New Orleans. We then head north again via some excellent rides in the Ouachita’s and Ozarks in Arkansas to hit Route 66 At Tulsa. Heading west across Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle we turn north at Alberqueque toward Santa Fe. Hitting the southern Rockies we weave our way through some awesome rides in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah. Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon before some cool rides in the Sierra’s and of course the California 1, Pacific Coast Highway before returning to LA to journeys end, having done 8 of the Top 10 Motorcycle rides in the USA as well as many more outstanding motorcycle routes.
